humor fades
in silence it disappears
around corners slinking
on its belly it gives one
last gasp before expiring
in the arms of its true believers
the ones whose faith depended
upon it to guide them through tyranny
with laughter their wholly prescriptive antidote whereon a cacophony of voices could arise and hover for just
one moment of relief as serotonin and endorphins seethed over bodies and minds only to recede having provided
a quick fix a lethal high that could
last only as long as there were jokes and
jokers to buoy haggard spirits but one by one a hood fell upon them blinding eyes blocking mouths deafening ears until all were padded into numbing silence and humor suffocated and no one noticed its demise
